When you’ve experienced trauma, whether from a single event or a long-term pattern, healing often feels like an uphill battle. You might understand what happened to you. You may even have talked about it in therapy. But the symptoms linger: anxiety, emotional numbness, sudden triggers, or a constant sense of being stuck.

That’s because trauma isn’t just stored in your thoughts. It’s stored in your body, in your nervous system, and often far below the surface of conscious awareness. For many people, talk therapy alone isn’t enough to fully access and resolve the emotional pain trauma leaves behind.

That’s where Brainspotting comes in.

Brainspotting is a powerful, body-based therapy that helps individuals access and process trauma stored deep in the brain and body. It’s a cutting-edge technique that goes beyond words, tapping into the parts of the nervous system where trauma often hides, and creating space for real, lasting healing.

What Is Brainspotting?

Brainspotting is a trauma-focused therapeutic method developed by Dr. David Grand in 2003. It builds on the science of eye movement and somatic processing, similar to EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), but uses a more open, client-led framework.

The foundation of Brainspotting lies in this idea: “Where you look affects how you feel.”

By guiding your eyes to specific spots in your visual field—“brainspots”—your therapist helps you access trauma and emotion stored deep in the brain and nervous system. Once accessed, these experiences can be safely processed, released, and integrated.

Brainspotting helps access the subcortical brain, the area responsible for emotion, memory, and survival responses. This is where trauma is often stored—beyond the reach of logic and language.

How Does Brainspotting Work?

In a Brainspotting session, you and your therapist work together to identify a brainspot related to the issue you’re working on. This may be a place where you feel a physical sensation, emotional charge, or tension when you focus your gaze in a particular direction.

Once the brainspot is located, your therapist will guide you in holding attention on that spot, allowing your brain and body to begin processing. There’s no need to “explain” or analyze what’s happening, your nervous system does the work. Sessions often involve:

  • A focused visual gaze at a specific point

  • Mindfulness of physical sensations and emotions

  • A quiet, supportive environment to allow the brain to naturally release stored trauma

  • Optional use of bilateral sound (alternating tones through headphones) to enhance processing

The experience can feel surprisingly gentle, even as it accesses deep emotional material.

Why Is Brainspotting So Effective for Trauma?

Trauma doesn’t live in logic, it lives in body memory, sensory cues, and emotional patterns. Traditional talk therapy can be incredibly helpful, but it doesn’t always reach the subconscious places where trauma hides. Brainspotting allows individuals to:

  • Access unconscious or preverbal trauma

  • Process trauma without needing to retell the full story

  • Work through freeze responses, chronic stress, and anxiety

  • Resolve body-based symptoms like tension, chronic pain, or dissociation

  • Rebuild a sense of safety and integration

Because it works with the deep brain and body systems, Brainspotting often results in faster and more sustainable breakthroughs for people who feel “stuck” in traditional therapy.

Conditions Brainspotting Can Help With

While Brainspotting is particularly known for its success in trauma recovery, it is also effective for a wide range of emotional and physical issues, including:

  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

  • Complex trauma and childhood abuse

  • Anxiety and panic attacks

  • Depression

  • Grief and loss

  • Performance anxiety

  • Chronic pain and illness

  • Dissociation

  • Emotional regulation difficulties

  • Unresolved attachment wounds

Many clients report that Brainspotting feels more intuitive and transformative than any other type of therapy they’ve tried.

What to Expect in a Brainspotting Session

Brainspotting sessions are typically 50–60 minutes and are guided by your emotional and physical responses. Here’s what a typical session might include:

  1. Check-in and focus selection: You and your therapist will briefly discuss what you want to work on. It could be a recent trigger, a physical sensation, or a recurring emotional pattern.

  2. Locating the brainspot: Using a pointer or your natural gaze, your therapist helps you identify a point in your visual field that connects with the emotional or physical activation.

  3. Processing time: You remain focused on the brainspot while noticing what comes up in your body and mind. Your therapist holds a grounded, attuned presence to support your nervous system’s natural healing.

  4. Integration: You’ll take time to reflect, ground, and gently close the session. There may be periods of silence, emotional release, or insight along the way—each session is unique.

Is Brainspotting Right for You?

Brainspotting may be especially helpful if:

  • You’ve tried talk therapy but still feel emotionally “stuck”

  • You have body symptoms (like tension or pain) tied to emotional stress

  • You have experienced trauma that is hard to put into words

  • You’re looking for a deeper, somatic approach to healing

At Safe Space Counseling, we offer Brainspotting in a safe, supportive environment. Our therapists are trained to help you gently access and process difficult material at your pace, without pressure to retell or explain every detail.

How Brainspotting Fits Into Trauma Therapy

Trauma healing isn’t one-size-fits-all. What works for one person may not work for another. That’s why Brainspotting can be a powerful complement to other therapeutic approaches, like talk therapy, CBT, or mindfulness-based practices.

It also supports nervous system regulation, which is key for people who have lived in fight, flight, or freeze states for long periods of time. Healing is not just about understanding what happened, it’s about feeling safe again in your own body.

Healing Is Possible—And You Don’t Have to Do It Alone

If you’ve been carrying the weight of trauma, emotional overwhelm, or anxiety, and nothing seems to fully help, Brainspotting could be the missing piece in your healing journey. It’s not about pushing through, it’s about letting go.

You deserve a therapy experience that honors your full self - mind, body, and nervous system.
